How to Raise Backyard Chickens for Eggs

Fresh eggs from backyard chickens are one of the most universally valuable barter items in any community. A dozen farm-fresh eggs sells for $5–10 (and up to $15 for specialty breeds) at farmers markets. Your ongoing cost per dozen is $1–3 in feed. A small flock of 4–6 hens produces 3–5 dozen eggs per week at peak laying — more than enough to consume and consistently trade.

Getting Started: The Basics

Check Local Ordinances First

Many cities and suburbs allow backyard chickens with restrictions on flock size and roosters. Check with your municipality before investing in a flock. Most residential areas allow 4–6 hens without a rooster.

A coop (minimum 4 sq ft per bird inside, 10 sq ft in run)
Chicks or started pullets (6–16 weeks old)
Chick starter feed (under 8 weeks), then layer pellets
Feeder and waterer

Hardware cloth (not chicken wire — predators break through it)

Step 1

Set Up the Brooder (For Chicks)

Baby chicks need warmth for the first 6 weeks. Set up a brooder: a plastic tub or cardboard box with 3 inches of pine shavings, a feeder, waterer, and heat lamp maintaining 95°F at chick level, decreasing by 5°F per week.

Step 2

Transition to the Coop

At 6–8 weeks (fully feathered), move chicks to the coop. Ensure the coop is predator-proof: hardware cloth on all openings, hardware cloth buried 12 inches in the ground around the run to prevent digging predators, and a locking door.

Step 3

Daily Care Routine

Morning: open coop door, check water, check feeders, collect any overnight eggs. Evening: close and lock the coop door — every night without exception. Weekly: clean waterer, add fresh bedding as needed. Monthly: full coop cleanout.

Step 4

Understand the Laying Cycle

Hens begin laying around 18–24 weeks of age. Production peaks in the first 2 years, then gradually declines. Hens lay less (or stop) in winter as daylight decreases — supplemental light (14 hours/day) can maintain production year-round. Hens molt annually and stop laying during molt.

Egg Washing and Storage

Fresh eggs have a natural 'bloom' (cuticle) that seals the pores and allows them to be stored unwashed at room temperature for 2–3 weeks. Once washed, refrigerate and use within 5 weeks. For barter: unwashed eggs stored at room temperature are actually preferred by many people who want the full shelf life.

Barter Value

Eggs are one of the most flexible barter items — tradeable for almost anything. Offer by the dozen or half-dozen. Blue and green eggs (Easter Eggers) command a 20–50% premium in many markets purely for novelty and aesthetic appeal. A consistent weekly egg trade is one of the most natural recurring barter relationships in any community.
